Since black roof tiles absorb modify and albescent ones emit it, we should all just plain re-do our roofs biannually to spend energy as the seasons change. Or maybe just get roof tiles that change colouration on their own.
A bunch of university students came up with this funky-looking roofing material, dubbed Thermeleon, which changes colouration based on temperature. According to initial studies, "in their albescent state, the tiles emit most 80 proportionality of the light falling on them, patch when black they emit exclusive most 30 percent." This would translate into most a 20 proportionality action on chilling costs in the summer.
Pretty neat, but alas there are no plans to change the tiles yet, and even if there were you'd probably have quite a battle with your bag owners association to establish them. [MIT News via Gizmag]
